Welcome to Redland District Special School which is located in Thornlands and close to beautiful Moreton Bay. Thornlands is about 40 minutes from the heart of Brisbane and surrounded by koala bushland and the sea.

Redland District Special School provides educational programs for students with disabilities from birth through to the completion of the allocation of 26 Semesters (including Prep) of State Schooling typically 17 years of age.

Programs for students of non-compulsory school age are delivered through the Redland District Early Childhood Development Program (ECDP). The school also provides a full time Prep program for students with high support needs who are more than likely to attend the Special School for their future schooling.

Our school provides a safe and supportive environment for students with disabilities to learn. Students access the Australian Curriculum which is differentiated to their learning needs. All students have Personalised Learning Plans that articulate individualised goals designed in conjunction with parents appropriate to the students learning needs.

Our school is divided into Early Years, Middle Years, Junior Secondary, and Senior Secondary cohorts. Class groups are developed based on factors such as age, maturity, social compatibility and developmental level. Class groups are normally between 4-7 students. All classes have a teacher and teacher aide. Some classes may have additional aide time to suit student need or program requirements.

Students at Redland District Special School access the Australian Curriculum through Education Queensland Curriculum into the Classroom units of work designed for students with intellectual disabilities. All students receive end of Semester Report cards.

Students in the Senior School aged 16 years and above access curriculum to support the achievement of the Queensland Certificate of Individual Achievement (QCIA) and have a Senior Education Training plan outlining the pathways available to the student to assist post school transition.

All school age students have an intellectual disability and a high percentage of students have additional impairments such as autism, physical or sensory impairments. Our school is designed and resourced to cater for our student population.

Our school accesses Regional services to provide occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech language therapy, guidance services and specialist nursing services.
